What is

Poultry Manure?

Poultry Manure is a mixture of poultry waste, produced by chickens, turkeys, ducks, spilled feed, and often includes materials, likes bedding, such as sawdust, wood shavings, peanut hulls, straw, and other dry, absorbent, low-cost materials.

WHY DRY POULTRY MANURE?

Drying poultry manure is an essential step in converting a challenging waste product into a valuable, manageable, and environmentally friendly resource. Here are the key reasons why drying poultry is advantageous:

Enhanced Nutrient Concentration and Availability – By significantly reducing moisture content, drying poultry manure concentrates vital nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. This process not only boosts nutrient density but also maximizes their availability to plants, transforming the manure into a highly effective organic fertilizer.

Reduction of Odors –  Fresh poultry manure emits strong odors and can harbor harmful pathogens. Drying significantly mitigates these issues by reducing order intensity by up to 69.3%, eliminating up to 99.97% of harmful bacteria like E. coli, and decreasing the presence of yeast and mold by up to 99.6%. (ResearchGate, Science Publication)

Minimization of Pest Infestations – High moisture content in manure creates a breeding ground for pests like flies. By drying the manure, this environment is disrupted, leading to a reduction in pest-related issues within poultry facilities.

Improved Handling and Storage – Dry manure is lighter, less sticky, and more granular, making it easier to handle, transport and store. It has a longer shelf life, allowing for extended storage without significant degradation.

In summary, drying poultry manure not only improves nutrient content and reduces odors but also minimizes pest issues and enhances the practicality of handling and storing the manure.
