WHAT IS AN INDUSTRIAL TWIN SHAFT BATCH MIXER?

An industrial twin-shaft batch mixer is a horizontal batch mixer that uses two counter-rotating agitator shafts to rapidly blend dry and wet bulk materials. The opposing shafts create overlapping mixing zones that move material end-to-end and side-to-side, producing fast, uniform, and repeatable blends.

Twin shaft mixers are commonly used for powders, granules, pellets, feed ingredients, fertilizer, food ingredients, minerals, chemicals and other bulk solids where short cycle times, liquid addition and consistent batch quality are important.

Paddle/Ribbon Design

Scott Equipment’s paddle/ribbon agitator is effective because it combines two distinct mixing actions into a single agitator. Rather than relying solely on paddles or ribbons, the design provides simultaneous conveying, lifting, folding, and blending, resulting in faster, more uniform mixing with less energy and shorter batch times.

HOW DOES SCOTT’S TWIN SHAFT MIXER WORK?

HOW TWIN SHAFTS MOVE MATERIAL

Inside the mixer, two horizontal shafts rotate in opposite directions. Each shaft has Scott Equipment’s paddle/ribbon combination.

  • The paddle/ribbon combination moves material from end-to-end and side-to-side.
  • Creates a continuous, efficient movement of material across the mixer.
  • Optional paddle/paddle design

RAPID, UNIFORM LIQUID INCORPORATION

Liquids are introduced through a top-mounted header pipe with multiple inlet ports for fast, uniform distribution.

  • Optional liquid manifold box
  • Available in a variety of header pipe and inlet port sizes
  • Nozzles tailored to your material for consistent liquid addition

DISCHARGE FEATURES

Twin-shaft mixers can feature Scott Equipment’s full-length drop-bottom gates.

  • Entire batch empties quickly and completely
  • Minimal residue between batches
  • NEW! ERD drop-gate design

TWIN SHAFT MIXER FAQs

What is a twin shaft mixer?

A twin-shaft mixer uses two counter-rotating agitator shafts to move and blend material throughout a horizontal mixing chamber rapidly.

How does a twin shaft mixer work?

Two shafts rotate in opposite directions, lifting, folding, and moving material end-to-end and side-to-side to create a fast, uniform blend.

What is the difference between a twin shaft and single shaft mixer?

A twin-shaft mixer uses two counter-rotating shafts to create a fluidized mixing zone, while a single-shaft mixer uses one agitator shaft. The best design depends on the material, capacity, and desired mixing action.

How fast does a twin shaft mixer mix?

Scott’s paddle/ribbon configuration can achieve mix times of approximately 30–90 seconds, depending on the material and application.

What capacity Twin Shaft Mixers are available?

Scott Equipment Twin Shaft Mixers are available in capacities from approximately 1 to 1,500 ft³.

Can a twin shaft mixer add liquids?

Yes. Fluidized mixing can provide uniform liquid application and coating across the material.

Can I test my material before buying a mixer?

Yes. Scott Equipment’s Test Lab includes production-scale mixing equipment to evaluate actual materials and process requirements.
