What is an industrial single shaft mixer?

An industrial single-shaft mixer is a horizontal batch mixer that uses a single rotating agitator shaft to move materials radially and end to end through the mixing chamber. Depending on the material and desired mixing action, the shaft can use ribbon, paddle, or combination paddle/ribbon agitators.

Scott Equipment Single Shaft Mixers are designed for fast, repeatable blending of dry powders, granules, pellets, wet ingredients, and materials requiring liquid addition, coating, heating, or cooling.

BENEFITS OF A sINGLE SHAFT MIXER

FAST, UNIFORM MIXING

Achieve homogeneous blends in as little as 90 seconds, with even faster mix times possible for select materials and applications.

RIBBON & PADDLE AGITATORS

Choose from ribbon, paddle, paddle/ribbon, and specialty agitator configurations to match material characteristics and mixing requirements.

Low-profile design

The horizontal mixer configuration provides high-capacity batch mixing while helping minimize overall equipment height.

fAST, COMPLETE DISCHARGE

Optional, customizable drop-bottom gateS provide rapid product discharge and efficient cleanout between batches.

HEATING & COOLING options

Jacketed mixer designs are available for applications requiring controlled heating or cooling during processing.

HOW DOES A SINGLE SHAFT MIXER WORK?

Material enters a horizontal mixing chamber where a rotating agitator continuously lifts, folds, and conveys the product throughout the vessel. The agitator creates both radial and end-to-end material movement, helping distribute ingredients throughout the entire batch.

The agitator design depends on material characteristics and process goals. Ribbon configurations provide gentle, efficient blending of free-flowing powders, while paddle and paddle/ribbon configurations provide greater lifting, fluidization, coating, and mixing action for heavier or more challenging materials.

END-TO-END AGITATOR CONVEYANCE

High-rotation mixing action moves material
the full length of the trough, ensuring
every particle is engaged for a uniform blend.

SUPER BATCH REPEATABILITY

A consistent coefficient of variation
between 3% and 6% ensures that every batch meets
the same high standard as the last.

FLEXIBLE BATCH SIZING

Handles batch sizes from 1 ft³ to 1500 ft³, configurable
to fit mid-scale production or high-volume industrial lines.

HEAVY DUTY CONSTRUCTION

Built from solid, heavy steel tubing
with AGMA Class II-rated drives – and available
in carbon or full stainless steel.

Scott Equipment ribbon-ribbon shaft for mixers

RIBBON/RIBBON

Best for powders and free-flowing materials

A ribbon agitator creates continuous end-to-end and radial material movement throughout the mixer. The overlapping ribbon design moves material in opposite directions to promote fast, uniform blending while keeping product handling relatively gentle.

  • Full-trough end-to-end material conveyance
  • Typical mix time: 90-120 seconds
  • CV of 3-5% achievable
  • Low-shear – preserves particle integrity
  • Suitable for batch sizes 1-1,500 ft³

Best for: Free-flowing dry powders • premixes • feed ingredients • dry ingredients

Paddle ribbon agitator used in industrial mixers for combined blending and material movement by Scott Equipment

PADDLE/RIBBON

Best for versatile industrial mixing

The paddle/ribbon configuration combines lifting and tumbling action with end-to-end material movement. This versatile design works well with materials that vary in density, particle size, or flow characteristics.

  • Handles denser, coarser, or sticky materials
  • Dual-action: fluidization and end-to-end conveyance
  • Typical mix time: 90-120 seconds
  • Moderate shear profile
  • Uniform blending

BEST FOR: GRANULES • PELLETS • ANIMAL FEED • FERTILIZER • COARSE INGREDIENTS

Scott Equipment Double Paddle single shaft mixer

PADDLE/PADDLE

Best for lifting, tumbling, and liquid additon

Paddle agitators lift and tumble material throughout the mixing chamber, blending effectively while creating open areas for liquid addition. Paddle configurations can also provide easier access and cleanability for certain applications.

  • Higher mixing intensity, full batch width
  • Agglomerate break-up
  • Liquid addition/coating applications
  • Compatible with heating/cooling jacket option
  • Serrated paddle variant available for fibrous materials.

BEST FOR: COARSE MATERIALS •  PELLETS • LIQUID ADDITION • COATING • BULK MATERIALS

SINGLE SHAFT MIXER FAQs

WHAT IS A SINGLE SHAFT MIXER?

A horizontal batch mixer uses one rotating shaft equipped with ribbons, paddles, or a combination of agitators to create uniform blends.

How fast can a single shaft mixer blend a batch?

Scott single-shaft mixers can achieve homogeneous blends in about 90 seconds, with some applications taking as little as 30 seconds.

What is the difference between a ribbon mixer and paddle mixer?

Ribbon agitators provide gentle axial and radial movement for free-flowing powders, while paddles provide greater lifting and fluidization for larger particles, wet ingredients, and materials that require liquid addition.

Can a single shaft mixer add liquids to powders?

Yes. Single-shaft mixers can be configured with liquid-addition systems to coat, wet, and blend liquid ingredients into dry materials.

Can a single shaft mixer heat or cool material?

Yes. Jacketed mixer configurations can provide heating or cooling when required by the process.

What size single shaft mixers are available?

Scott Equipment offers configurations ranging from approximately 1 to 1,500 cubic feet.

What industries use single shaft mixers?

Common industries include food, animal feed, pet food, fertilizer, chemicals, plastics, minerals, construction materials, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and bioenergy.

Can I test my material before purchasing a mixer?

Yes. Scott Equipment offers material testing to evaluate mixer configuration, mixing performance, and process requirements before selecting production equipment.
