AIR-SWEPT

TUBULAR DRYER

The Air-Swept Tubular Dryer is a continuous flash-drying system engineered for difficult, high-moisture materials. Adjustable paddles, air dams, controlled airflow, and high heat transfer efficiently transform slurries, filter cakes, powders, and granules into a consistent, free-flowing product.

AST DRYING

OPERATION

The Air-Swept Tubular Dryer (AST)  delivers rapid, consistent moisture removal through a controlled combination of high-velocity heated air, adjustable paddles, and precision-engineered air dams.

By managing material flow and retention time inside the dryer, the AST Dryer efficiently processes a wide range of materials – from fine, dry powders to moist, granular substances.

Explore the diagram and the AST Dryer animation below to see how material moves through each stage of the drying process. Together, they provide a step-by-step look at the airflow, material flow, and engineered components that deliver fast, efficient, and consistent drying performance.

Controlled Drying

Precision control of airflow, material movement, and retention time for optimal drying performance.

Versatile Capability

Effectively dries a wide range of materials, from fine powders to sticky, high-moisture substances.

high efficiency

Maximizes heat transfer and evaporation for faster drying and reduced operating costs.

consistent results

Delivers a uniform, free-flowing product with reliable quality, batch after batch.

How the AST DRYER WORKS

Inlet and Flash zone

The Inlet Zone performs initial size reduction and removes most moisture through a highly turbulent agitator area, adjustable paddles, and high-velocity airflow. Fixed agitator blades break apart wet material to maximize heat transfer, while adjustable paddles continuously recirculate wetter product until it becomes free-flowing. Air dams then classify the material, allowing only properly dried product to advance to the next drying zone.

RETENTION ZONE

The Retention Zone continues the drying process by combining adjustable mixing paddles with controlled airflow to optimize material retention. A second set of air dams further classifies the product, ensuring only properly dried material advances to the final stage.

discharge zone

The Discharge Zone provides final drying, controlled airflow, and efficient product discharge. Similar to the Retention Zone, it uses adjustable mixing paddles that are configured to move the finished material toward the outlet while maintaining consistent product flow.

GAS FIRED BURNER

A direct- or indirect-fired burner heats the process air to the required operating temperature, providing efficient and controlled drying. PLC-based controls continuously adjust the burner output to maintain consistent process temperatures for optimal drying performance.

CONTROLLED FEEDING SYSTEM

The Feeding System delivers a steady, controlled flow of material into the dryer for consistent drying performance. Depending on the application, Scott Equipment utilizes a Cake Feeder, Mixer Feeder, or pump, each equipped with a variable frequency drive (VFD) for smooth startup and precise feed control.

AIR SWEPT TUBULAR DRYER

The AST Dryer blends material with a heated air stream and retains it until the desired moisture level is achieved. Three engineered drying zones work together to provide efficient moisture removal and consistent product quality.

PRODUCT COLLECTOR AND EXHAUST FAN

The Product Collector separates dried material from the process air while the exhaust fan maintains consistent airflow throughout the system. Operating under negative pressure, the system promotes clean, efficient, and dust-controlled drying performance.

BUILT AROUND YOUR DRYING PROCESS

Every AST Dryer is sized and configured around your material, incoming moisture, desired final moisture, capacity, temperature limitations, and facility requirements
