Let’s talk Depackaging Machines

In two words… SUPER INTERESTING! Especially for organic waste recycling and diversion from landfills. They have become crucial because it is estimated that 30% of all landfills are food- like expired and damaged foods from supermarkets, food manufacturers, or mass recalls. Over 50 million tons of truckloads come with packaged products, and you can’t just throw them directly into a biogas digester or composting row.

What is a depackaging machine?

A depackaging machine is equipment designed to separate organic content from its packaging, whether it’s plastic, metal, glass or cardboard – so the organic material can be used in processes like anaerobic digestion or composting, and the package material can be recycle or disposed of properly.

INDUSTRIES THAT USE DEPACKAGERS

Biogas facilities

Composting facilities

Farming operations

Food & beverage manufacturers

Distribution centers

Waste transfer stations

Third party service providers

There are several types of depackagers, which is best?

1. SQUEEZERS

Low speed auger screws and hydraulic presses to press and squeeze the organics from the packaging.

PRO – can accept more contamination

CON – Can trap organics and push the trash, higher costs to operate and repair

2. Hammer Mills

High speed horizontal processing shaft with fixed angle swinging karate chopping heads.

PRO – great at size reduction and throughput in smaller spaces; popular in Europe for smaller plastic bags of residential organic waste

CON – require water to process, narrow heads shred packaging

3. VERTICAL SHAFT

High-speed vertical processing shaft with 19 fixed-angle fins; organics are conveyed through the screen case, and packaging is fanned to the top and out.

PRO – horizontal hopper allows liquids to flow freely

CON – wrapping issues on infeed reduces throughput; screens are difficult to replace; high-speed shaft often requires seal and fin replacement

4. HORIZONTAL SHAFT

Medium horizonal processing shaft with 30-56 flat adjustable angle heads.

PRO – efficient flat paddles slap packaging and reduce the creation of microplastics; can process widest variety of packaging types.

CON – beverage depack requires wetkit to pump liquids from infeed hopper

The Winner - Turbo Separator!

Our Turbo Separator horizontal shaft depackaging system!   BUT WHY?

  • CLEANER ORGANICS – Flat paddles separate the best and create clean organics
  • LESS MAINTENANCE – Horizontal support bearings and seals on the exterior of the system. Slower speed = less wear = lower vibration
  • MOST FLEXIBLE – sugar packets to onions in netted bags to 5 gallon pails
  • MOST DURABLE – system weight is in the processing shaft and shell, not the stand and skins like the other types
  • MOST CHOICES – over nine different machines and size options, including mobile organics processing

  1. What packaged organics do you want to process?
  2. How many tons per day to start? How many in three years and beyond?
  3. Location –  Will the matchine be indoor? Outdoor? What is the climate like?
  4. Organics and repackaging – what are the volumes and disposition?
  5. Cash or financing?

In Summary

Depackaging machines play a vital role in enhancing sustainable waste management and promoting renewable energy production. By effectively separating organic material from its packaging, these machines improve the performance and reliability of biogas systems, boost recycling rates, and lessen reliance on landfills.
As regulations become stricter and the demand for cleaner, circular solutions increases, investing in the right depackaging technology is essential for any operation aiming to maximize resource recovery, improve operational efficiency, and contribute to a more environmentally friendly future.
