All Weather Package: Jacketed Machines
A jacketed machine is equipment designed with a secondary outer layer, or “jacket”, surrounding the main processing chamber.
This jacket allows for the circulation of heating or cooling fluids, such as water, steam or oil, helping to maintain consistent temperatures during processing. Jacketed machines are commonly used in industries that require precise thermal regulation, such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, and chemical manufacturing.
The Basic Idea
Three layers working together
- Inner Wall – holds the product
- Outer Wall (Jacket) -creates a cavity for fluid flow
- Thermal Fluid – steam, hot water, glycol, oil, or chilled water circulating through that cavity
Step-by-Step: What’s Really Happening Inside the Machine:
-
A heater/chiller sends fluids into the jacket inlet
-
The fluid flows around the vessel, touching the entire outer surface
-
Hat transfers through the metal wall into (or out of) the product
-
The fluid exits the outlet and returns to be reheated or recooled.
-
Meanwhile, the agitators continuously move the material, ensuring even heat distribution throughout the mix
Simultaneous mixing and heat transfer deliver precise, controlled material behavior.
Why Mixing Matters to the Jacket Working Well
If the product stayed still, only the material on the wall would change temperature. Continuous agitation brings fresh material into contact with the wall, allowing the entire batch to heat or cool uniformly.
What Controls the Temperature
- Temperature sensors in the product
- Control valve regulating jacket flow
- Steam pressure or chiller set point
- Operator set temperature (hold at 120°F, cool to 70°F etc.
This creates a closed-loop temperature control system
Machines Scott Equipment Can Add a Jacket to:
Twin Shaft Mixer
Single Shaft Mixer
Tender Blend Mixer
High-Speed Blender
Duplex Blender
Slurry Blender
Pugmills
Cake Feeders
Mixer Feeder
Indirect Dryers
Vaccum Dryers
You can use a jacketed mixer anywhere where material behavior changes with temperature, and you need it to flow, blend, react, or dry consistently during processing.

Food & ingredient processing
-
Pet Food, Feed & Grains
-
Biofuels, Organics & recycling
-
Chemical & Industrial Material
If the material gets sticky when cold, solid when cool, too thick to move, or too hot during processing, you may want a jacketed mixer.
